Harold H. Hunter, 86, of Topeka, KS, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010. Harold Hermus Hunter was born August 25, 1923; son of Edwin and Elma (Pelsma) Hunter. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1941 and was a Staff Sergeant for the Army Division HqCo 182 Infantry during WWII; where he served in the Southwest Pacific.
Harold was united in marriage to Doris Arthur on November 10, 1946 in Osage City, KS. He worked for many years at the State Printing Plant as a Book Binder. After early retirement, he worked for Manpower at various jobs that included V.I.P. parking attendant for Heartland Park raceway, delivering items for Junior Achievement in Topeka and Lawrence, and was the general Go-To guy at Washburn University basketball games. He worked steadily until the end of January, 2004. Harold was a Kansas State fan and an avid car-racing fan, enjoying both NASCAR and Indy formula racing. He has attended many races and enjoyed them on TV also.
Harold was a member of Crestview United Methodist Church, Siloam Lodge #225 A.F. & A.M., and VFW Post #1650. He enjoyed volunteering at TARC and was a Special Olympics Coach.
He is survived by his two daughters, Vicki (Tom) Carreno, Topeka; and Nancy Stump, Lawrence; granddaughters, Holly (Brian) Hagman, Prairie Village; and Randee Carreno, Topeka; grandson, Logan Harding, Lawrence; granddaughter, Kim Mulford and her son Dylan, Delia; and great-grandson, Hunter H. Hagman, Prairie Village.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Elma; wife, Doris; sister, Jean Porter; and son-in-law, Paul Stump.
Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, in Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka, with a Funeral Service to follow at Crestview United Methodist Church, 2245 Eveningside Drive, Topeka. Harold will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka. Memorials may be directed to TARC, 2701 Randolph, Topeka, KS 66611-1599.
