Harold D. Swedlund, 87, of Topeka, passed away January 24, 2014.
He was born February 16, 1926, in Fleming, CO, the son of Edwin O. and Maybelle P. (Knight) Swedlund.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving at Okinawa during WWII. On May 3, 1945, his ship was hit with six Kamikaze planes, which severely damaged the ship and took 42 shipmates. While on leave at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, he met Stella L. Plattor and they were married three weeks later on September 27, 1945, in New York City.
After being discharged from the Navy he went to work for Santa Fe Railway Company in their Treasury Department, located on Wall Street, for 25 years. In December 1971, Harold was transferred to their Topeka offices as Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer. He retired in June of 1989.
He attended the University of Southern California, in 1966, by appointment of the President of the Santa Fe Railway. He later attended Washburn University in Topeka.
Harold loved the Lord with his whole heart and soul and leaves a legacy of faith and love that his family forever treasures. He was a member of Brookwood Covenant Church and the Southwest Chapter of Topeka Gideons.
Harold was preceded in death by his precious wife, Stella, on February 2, 2001. He was also preceded by an infant son in 1948, his oldest son Rev. Paul E. Swedlund on August 17, 1994, and three brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his son, Harold (Constance) Swedlund, Jr., and his daughter, Jerilyn (Gerald) Lauber, all of Topeka; his beloved grandchildren, Scott P. (Dae Curtiss) Swedlund, one great grandson and two great granddaughters, Lawrence, KS; Melaney (Matthew) Eshelby and two great grandsons, Olathe, KS; Jeremy (Ravan) Swedlund and three great granddaughters and two great grandsons, Topeka; Nicholas (Daphne) Lauber and one great grandson and another due in June, Parkville, MO; Matthew (Juliet) Swedlund and one great granddaughter, Seattle, WA; Gina (Jason) Daley and one great granddaughter, Shawnee, KS. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Andrea (Rev. Paul) Reiter, St. Louis, MO.
Harold will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2014, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, where the family visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at Brookwood Covenant Church, 3601 SW 33rd Street, Topeka. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka.
Memorial contributions may be made to Brookwood Covenant Church, The Gideons, and Grace Hospice, in care of the funeral home.
