Hannah Ellen Hulsopple Hook, 96, of Silver Lake, passed away Wednesday, October 5 at a Topeka hospital.

She was born March 10, 1909 in a farmhouse near Scranton, the daughter of Edward E. and Isabella Isaacs Hulsopple.

In 1927, she graduated from Scranton High School, passed the teacher's examination, and began teaching at a one room school near Scranton. She later attended Strickler's Business College. She worked as a bookkeeper for several years at Independent Lubricating Company of Topeka until 1945.

She married Benjamin Murrah Hook, Jr. on October 14, 1933 in Carleton, Nebraska. They farmed in the Silver Lake area for many years. He preceded her in death in 1986. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Thomas, Waldo "Pete", William "Bud", and Edward "Kok" Hulsopple and two sisters, Barbara Craig and Leone Hulsopple.

She was a member of Silver Lake United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher for more than 20 years, and also as Sunday school treasurer and church treasurer for many years. She served as the H.D.U. representative for Grove 4 H Club and on the Grove Township Election Board. She was a member of Silver Lake Senior Citizen's, Inc. and Grove Harvest Grange. Hannah was honored this year at the Scranton High School Alumni Banquet as the oldest living graduate. She played basketball during high school and in Topeka business leagues after high school. In her later years she enjoyed gardening, playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters; Barbara Renfro and her husband Mike, Silver Lake and Vera Leiker and her husband Cliff, Silver Lake;three grandchildren, Annette Fieger and her husband Darin, Silver Lake, Benjamin "Bennie" Leiker, Las Vegas, Nevada, Dennis "Mike" Renfro, II and his wife Megan, Silver Lake; two step-grandchildren, Cliff Leiker, Jr and Anthony "Tony" Leiker; both of Las Vegas, Nevada; three great grandchildren, Joseph Priddy, Olivia Fieger and Brogan Renfro, all of Silver Lake; four step great grandchildren, Emily, Megan, Alan and Karissa Leiker, all of Topeka.

Mrs. Hook will lie in state after 1:00 pm, Sunday October 9 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 pm that evening. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, October 10 at the Silver Lake United Methodist Church with burial to follow in Silver Lake Cemetery.
