Guy B. Daniel

April 6, 1928 — August 2, 2019

Guy B. Daniel, 91, formerly of Topeka, died peacefully at his home in Overland Park on Friday, Aug. 2, surrounded by family.

He is survived by a sister, Louise Page, of Odessa, Texas; a brother, Lea, of El Paso, Texas; a son, Darryl, of Kansas City, Mo., and daughters Dawn Peete, of Leawood, Denise Quatman, of Kansas City, Mo., and Dena Daniel, of South Orange, N.J. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Bernadine "Bernie" Humphreys Daniel, and his brothers Truitt and Barton.

Before retiring in 1991, Guy worked in the personnel department for Southwestern Bell for 39 years, the last 22 in Topeka. He moved to Brookdale Senior Living Center in Overland Park in 2013.

Guy was born on his mother's 30th birthday, April 6, 1928, Good Friday, in the back bedroom of the house on the family farm outside Hamlin, Texas. He and his siblings attended a one-room schoolhouse before Guy moved with his family to Abilene, Texas, when he was in second grade. The family then split their time between the farm and town.

A star athlete at Abilene High School, Guy earned a football scholarship to Texas A&M University, where he majored in accounting and graduated in 1949. He was active in ROTC, and after college, he joined the U.S. Air Force as a captain. He served in the military for two years before starting his career with Southwestern Bell.

He moved up quickly and was transferred several times. While working in Dallas, he met Bernadine, a young artist working as a telephone-bill typist. They married in 1956, and after another transfer to Austin, welcomed their twin daughters, Martye Dawn and Marlene Denise. Darryl Guy and Dena Marie were born after the family moved to Houston.

In 1969, Guy got his last transfer, to Topeka, where the family put down roots. The Daniels were active churchgoers and were charter members of Covenant Baptist Church. Guy was also active in Bell's philanthropic organization, the Pioneers. Guy and Bernie were long-time season-ticket holders at the Topeka Civic Theater and Topeka Symphony Orchestra.

The purchase of a boat in the early 1970's ignited a love of lake life and water skiing for the family. Vacations were spent almost exclusively in the Ozarks at Table Rock Lake. After their children left the house, Guy and Bernie discovered snow skiing and went frequently to Colorado.

After losing Bernie to cancer in 1992, Guy dedicated his energies to volunteer work at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. He soon proved himself to so reliable that he was entrusted with the serious task of preparing surgical carts for upcoming procedures..
