Gordon Paul (Pete) Spiker, 92, Topeka, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2010 at Presbyterian Manor.
Gordon was born July 19, 1918 in Circleville, KS, the son of John W. and Sophia V. (Baertch) Spiker. He attended rural schools in the area, helped on his parents' farm and later traveled to the northwest as a migrant worker.
Gordon was a World War II U. S. Army veteran and served in the Pacific Theatre from 1944 to 1946. After returning to Kansas, he became a carpenter and was member of Carpenters Local 1445 for over 55 years. Gordon helped to construct many buildings and homes in the Topeka and surrounding areas. He was particularly proud of his work as foreman on the Topeka Zoo's Tropical Rainforest building.
Gordon was a past member of Highland Park United Methodist Church and a current member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was also a member of American Legion Post #1 for over 30 years.
Gordon was previously married and divorced. On May 1, 1948 Gordon married Betty June Hoppe in Holton, Kansas. She survives. Other survivors include sister Irene Cowger, Holton, KS, daughters Laveita Pfeffer, Yakima, WA, Patricia (David) Freeman, Springfield, MO, Janice Spiker, Topeka, KS, Deanna (Ron) Meyer, Buda, TX, Carol Spiker, Topeka, KS, son Randall (Carol) Spiker, Lawrence, KS, grandchildren Tamara Sweeney, Todd Robbins, Terry Robbins, Chad Pfeffer, JoDee Cattrell, Jamee Swanson, Jesse Meyer, Shea Meyer, Erik Spiker several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Gardens. Gordon will lie in state at the funeral home after 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday with visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
