Gordon Gibson

Gordon C. "Gabby" Gibson, 68, Auburn, died at his home May 24, 2009, after a courageous seven year battle with cancer.

Gordon was able to fight his disease so long because of his strong will and determination and the excellent care he received from Dr. Robert E. and Anita Jacoby II, Dr. David Einspahr, Cotton-O'Neil Cancer Center and his nurses, especially super nurses, Lana and Katie.

He was born December 10, 1940 in Milwaukee, WI, the son of Carl and Dorothy (Kelley) Gibson. Gordon served in the U.S. Air Force which brought him to Topeka where he met his future wife, Madonna Holder. They were married January 22, 1960 at Seaman Baptist Church. She survives.

He retired from Goodyear in 1998 after 37 years of service. He formed many long-lasting friendships with co-workers and hosted an annual bonfire cookout for those friends and their families.

Gordon was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt with his son and many close friends. He also enjoyed traveling with Bob and Anita Jacoby, Doug and Julie Oliver, Jerry and Connie Oliver and other friends and family members. Their travels included camping trips to the Ozarks, RV trips to Alaska and Florida as well as cruises to Hawaii.

A great day for Gordon was a day in the woods with good friends, a box of donuts, and a pot of coffee, followed by a family dinner.

He leaves to cherish and honor his memory his wife of 49 1/2 years, Madonna; son, Gordon Calvin and wife, DeAnna; daughters, Sherri Gibson and Donna Johnson; grandsons, Michael and Matthew Johnson and granddaughters, Brooke and Grace Gibson and Katie Johnson, all of Topeka.
He is also survived by his parents, Joseph and Dorothy Bazen, Eau Claire, WI; sisters, Eunice Muensburg and husband, Ned of Eau Claire, and Gloria Martin, Brookfield, WI; two nephews and four nieces, of Wisconsin and one nephew and family of Montana.

Gordon was preceded in death by his father, Carl Gibson.

Gordon will lie in state after 2:00 PM Wed. May 27, with a family visitation from 6-8 PM at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. A celebration and remembrance of Gordon's life will be held Thurs., at 3 PM, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Auburn Cemetery.

Family and friends are invited to join us for "Gabby's" farewell wiener roast and potluck following the services.
