Gloria May

November 16, 1929 — April 1, 2020

Gloria (Salts) May was born November 16, 1929 in Mayetta, Kansas to Glen and Gladys Salts. Gloria passed away peacefully in Topeka, Kansas on April 1, 2020 surrounded by family.

Gloria graduated from Hoyt High School in 1947. She married Charles McKeever on May 20, 1947. In 1950, she and Chuck started a small restaurant called the Nighthawk Grill located at 7th and Harrison. She was a stay at home mom for several years. During that time she divorced and married Raymon May in September 1959. Later she became a baker for the Byrd's Nest restaurant; apple pie was her specialty. She was featured as Cook of The Week in the Capital Journal and again in a cookbook the newspaper published in 1996. Later in life, she worked for the Shawnee County Health department as a home health aide.

Her biggest accomplishment was raising 7 children. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In her spare time she liked to frequent garage sales. She loved to watch the Kansas City Royals and the KU Jayhawks basketball team. She was a fan of country music and Elvis Presley.

Gloria is survived by her brother Leland Salts and her sister June Bailey, her children; Sonja (Craig)
Dunstan, Yolanda (Payne Mendenhall)McKeever, Brenda (Jeff) Jones, Wanda (Gary)Bond, Rayla (Mike) Johnston, Daniel (Tamara) May, and Bill (Renee) May; 27 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and her sister Bonnie Stueve.

Cremation is planned. A Celebration of her Life will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at Mount Hope Cemetery Funeral Chapel, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka, KS 66604. Please join the family after the service for a reception at Mount Hope. Masks are strongly encouraged and we ask that you maintain social distancing.

A special thanks to everyone who cared for our mom, Gloria May throughout her years there, from:
1. The nurses and aides, we call earth angels, who tiredlessly and lovingly cared for her. Not only did you care for her health, but made sure she felt pretty as you groomed her and helped her pick her clothes out for the day.
2. The Beauty Shop staff
3. The custodial staff and building facilitators who so willingly helped her with things like hanging pictures and décor, hooking up televisions or phones, and keeping her room clean.
4. The dining room staff and dieticians who kept her fed.
5. The pastoral staff who prayed with her, gave her peace and helped her feel close to Christ.
6. To the administrative staff who kept things running.
