Gloria Lura Barron, 93, of Topeka, passed away Friday, May 20, 2022.
She was born November 5, 1928, in Wewoka, Oklahoma, the daughter of George M. and Lura Elizabeth (Blanchard) Fentem. She grew up in Eureka Springs, Arkansas graduating from Eureka Springs High School in 1946. She attended the University of Arkansas for two years, later graduating from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor's Degree in Education.
Gloria was a teacher at Rochester Elementary School for 20 years and retired in 1987. She enjoyed teaching and shaping the minds of adolescent children.
She and her husband, Jack, began their membership with First Baptist Church in 1964 and has been an active member. Gloria was also active with the Delta Gamma Alumni Association of Topeka, the Kansas Society of Mayflower Descendants, Howland Society and other various historical and family groups.
Gloria enjoyed traveling and camping with Jack throughout the United States working on genealogy. They also traveled overseas to England, Scotland, Ireland and a Scandinavian trip. She also enjoyed painting and bird watching. She loved to read and was a part of various book clubs. Her family was her pride and joy. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, their spouses and great grandchildren.
Gloria married Jack L. Barron on July 12, 1948 in Rogers, Arkansas. He survives. Other survivors include her children, David M. Barron and Susan (Mark) Schafer; nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, John Barron and daughter in law, Nancy D. (Fenton) Barron.
Honoring Gloria's wishes, cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at the First Baptist Church in Topeka. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. She will be laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas.
