Glenwood C. Henderson

Glen Henderson (93) passed away at his home in Topeka on July 19, 2017. Glen was born on August 1, 1923 in Topeka, son of Everett Guy and Pearl Madge (Duncan). Glen grew up in Topeka attending Quinton Heights Elementary School, Crane Junior High, and graduated from Topeka High in 1941. He met his future wife Mary Furgason in the library at THS. They married on March 23, 1944. They celebrated their 73rd anniversary last March.

Glen served in the U.S. Navy in World II for three years, 1943 to 1945. He served as a Japanese Radio Intercept Operator in the Aleutian Islands and on the USS Richmond. Glen was a member of The American Legion and the U.S. Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association.

Glen began his Veterans Administration career at the Winter General VA Hospital in 1946 in Topeka and continued at the Colmery-O'neil VA Medical Center retiring in 1978 as the Chief of Medical Administration Service. Glen graduated from Clark's Business College in Topeka, Kansas while working at the VA. He continued working part-time for his son Tom at the Alderson Law Firm assisting in the care of veterans for over 30 more years beyond his retirement.

Glen was a charter member of University United Methodist Church.

Glen enjoyed playing golf well into his 80's. His true joy was gathering with his family regularly and on holidays and special occasions. He loved playing board games and card games with his family. Glen and Mary made friends of the clerks and servers in retail stores and restaurants throughout Topeka.

Glen was pre-deceased by three brothers and a sister all of whom served in the military during World War II.

He is survived by his wife Mary of the home, his two sons Thomas C. (Cinda) and Rev. Jay B., both of Topeka, two grandsons Keith (Stefanie) of Lawrence and Kent (Gigi) of Topeka, great grandchildren Landon Glen Henderson and Josephine Harris of Topeka, and Evelyn Mary Henderson, Lawrence, many beloved nieces and a nephew and their families, and many extended family members including Linda Foster and Leah Robinson.

A memorial service will be held at University United Methodist Church Wednesday, July 26, at 10:30 am. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service. Graveside services with military honors will be held at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery following the service.

Glen's family wishes to thank Great Lakes Hospice and Angels in the Home for their loving care.
