Glenn H. Chestnut, 86, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2009, at his home. Glenn was born April 27, 1923, in Denison, KS, the son of Ira B. and Sarah (Sadie) Stuckert Chestnut. One sister, Flora Bottom, and four brothers, Cecil, Orville, Jimmy, and Martin preceded him in death.
Glenn joined the Army in 1943 and attended Clarkson College in Pottsdam, NY where he was assigned to the 209th Combat Engineer Battalion and served one year on the Lido Road in Burma. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to Topeka and worked at John Morrell and Co., until 1951, when he went to Goodyear where he worked until his retirement in 1985.
He married Audrey Yarger on August 21, 1948. She survives. Other survivors include: two sons, Jon K. of K.C., Mo., and Gayle K. of Topeka; two step-grandsons, Joe Campbell and Matt Campbell; 23 nieces and nephews.
Glenn was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years and volunteered at the Topeka Rescue Mission, Let's Help, and Stormont-Vail Health Care for many years.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2009 at West Lawn Memorial Gardens, I-70 and Auburn Rd., with a memorial service to follow at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 4746 SW 21st, at 2:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to Trinity Presbyterian Church or Topeka Rescue Mission.
