R. Glen Spees, 83, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007 at his home.
He was born Sept. 8, 1923 in Cole Harbor, ND, the son of Glen J. and Anna Reese Spees.
His family moved from Balfour, ND in 1941 and he graduated from Broadway High School in Seattle, WA in 1942. He enlisted in the Army on March 12, 1943 and served at Winter General Hospital in Topeka, receiving his honorable discharge on February 26, 1946.
His career began with Cities Service Oil and Topeka Petroleum before forming Capital City Oil with his partner, Frank Smith in 1960. Ownership of the company was sold to his son, Marvin Spees in 1985, where he continued to work until his death.
He married Lois Bower on April 2, 1944 in Topeka. She survives.
Other survivors include four daughters, Dorthy (Joe) Grohs, Beverly (Jerry) Thompson, Martha (Phil) Gray and Katherine (Courtney) Vaughn; one son, Marvin (Debbie) Spees; two sisters, Leona Robertson and Dorys Rear; ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Mr. Spees will lie in state after 2:00 pm, Wednesday, Feb. 14 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 6:30 pm that evening. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, Feb. 15 at Central Presbyterian Church, 920 SW. Huntoon, with burial to follow in the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, formerly known as Memorial Park Cemetery.
