7. Background: She attended grade school in Soldier and Maple Hill, Kansas. Ms. Vernon was a 1931 graduate of Herington High School, Herington, KS. She came to Topeka and worked for Farmers Union Jobbing Association and later transferred to their Kansas City Office. She served as a volunteer as a Gray Lady and the Red Cross while in Kansas City. After retirement in 1962 she returned to Topeka where she volunteered at the United Methodist Home and served as a tour guide at Ward Meade Park. One of her many interests was doing extensive research in family history.
She was a member of Crestview United Methodist Church, Topeka and Esther Chapter #96 Order of the Eastern Star in Herington. She was also a member of the American Women's volunteer Service during WWII and spent many hours helping service men who were stationed in Topeka or those passing through on the Troop Trains.
