Gladis Hunter

Gladis Joy Hunter, 96, Topeka, died Monday, September 5, 2005 at Aldersgate Village.

Gladis Joy was born February 20, 1909 in Luray, KS, the daughter of Frank Leslie and Etta May Clark Joy.

She attended elementary and high school in Luray, KS., graduating in 1926. SHe attended Emporia State College and Fort Hays State College, receiving her degree in 1965.

Mrs. Hunter taught for 25 years in elementary schools in Luray, Oakley, Oberlin, and Topeka, Kansas. She retired in 1971 from the former Sunny Elevation School in the Auburn-Washburn school district.

Mrs. Hunter was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Topeka, Kansas where she served as deacon for two years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Topeka Retired Teachers Association, and the National Association of Federal Employees.

She was married in 1933 to Marion Gaumer, who died in 1935. They made their home in Oberlin, Kansas. She married Wilbur Eugene Hunter on October 27, 1941 in Oberlin. He preceded her in death on April 15, 2005. Mr, and Mrs. Hunter made their home in Oberlin, Kansas until 1966 when thay moved to Topeka. The couple moved to Aldersgate Village in 1989.

She is survived by two daughters, Lynne Gaumer Flanders of Overland Park, Kansas and Janet Hunter Woerner of Yucaipa, California; one son, Thomas Hunter of McPherson, Kansas; five granddaughters, one grandson and six great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Leslie Torrence, Hutchinson, Kansas.

Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, September 7 at 2:00 pm in the Multipurpose Room of Trent Plaza at Aldersgate Village. Inurnment will be private.
