Gertrude Handley Stephens, 96, Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at Midland Hospice House.
Gertrude was born November 22, 1910 in Portsmouth, England, the daughter of William H.U. and Gertrude (Marchant) Handley.
She married Merle B. Stephens on October 5, 1941. He preceded her in death in October, 1973.
She was employed as Secretary and Bookkeeper in the firm of Howells, Hale and Wohlberg, Architects for many years. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Cathedral since 1926. Gertrude served the church by singing in the choir; as choir librarian; choir mother; Sunday school teacher; tour guide and volunteered in the office. She was a member of the Order of Daughters of the King and the Cathedral Knitting Ministry. She served on the Board of the Topeka Civic Symphony and sang in the chorus. She was a member of the Topeka Travel Club and Topeka Needlework Guild. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 25 years and did volunteer work at "Let's Help."
She is survived by one son, Thomas M. Stephens and wife, Barbara of Lenexa; two grandsons, Nathan T. and Travis R. Stephens and one granddaughter, Leslie Maccracken.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, August 31 at Grace Episcopal Cathedral. Inurnment will follow in The Chapel of the Resurrection Columbarium.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Cathedral Music Fund or the Building Fund.
