Gertrude Faye "Gert" Westerfield, 84, Overbrook, formerly of Tecumseh, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2009 at Brookside Manor.
Gert was born July 24, 1924 in Topeka, the daughter of Frederick and Gertrude Faye (Mulvihill) Hess. She graduated from Capital Catholic High School in 1943.
She worked for Santa Fe Railroad after graduation and later worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone in the Engineering department. She was instrumental in the design of the National Area Code system.
She was an Al-Anon delegate for the State of Kansas. She spent most of her life as an inspiration to other families in coping with alcoholism and treatment. She was a leader in the 4-H community, overseeing the rabbit and horse exhibits for Shawnee County. She stayed active riding her standard bicycle as her form of transportation.
She played the organ at St. Joseph's Catholic Church an currently a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
Gertrude married Curtis Harding in 1945. They later divorced. She married Raymond Lawrence Westerfield on November 25, 1961. He survives. Other survivors include sons, Ronald (Peggy) Harding, Granbury, TX, Stephen (Chris) Harding, Silver Lake; daughters, Lori Nottestad, Carbondale, Lari (Mark) Mertel, Topeka; 18 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald "Ronnie" Westerfield.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 5, 2009 at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 6th & Gage. Gert will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road, after 2:00 p.m. on Thursday with visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m.
