George W. Carney, 94, died, July 17, 2009 , in St. Helens , Oregon . He was born March 10, 1915 to William and Lena Lord Carney in Keokuk , Iowa
He was a loving husband and father, always a farmer, and a dedicated construction inspector and supervisor for over 40 years. In 1927 he moved to Kansas and lived with his Uncle George and Aunt Ethel Ruxton until graduation from Mildred High School where he lettered in football and track. By the age of 16, he began his farming career when he started working his own farm in Southeastern Kansas . Active in the Mildred community, he served on the Rising Star School board, and was a stalwart in the Mildred Methodist Church .
He married Beulah Brown on May 23, 1937 in Mildred. They lived and farmed near Bayard , KS . In 1953, they moved to Colorado Springs for 18 months and then to Topeka in 1954. His wife Beulah, passed away in 2002. In 2003, he moved into Atria Topeka, and subsequently to Avamere St Helens , Oregon where he was a resident from 2007 until his death. He made many wonderful friends in his new home and was loved by all who met him. He worked for Van Doren, Hazard & Stallings for almost 40 years, until his retirement. He never lost his love for farming, and from 1960 on, he owned a small farm near Lyndon/Quenemo. George was a long-time member and helped build Community Baptist church where he also served as an usher and played on the church softball team. Later, he was an active member and usher at First Southern Baptist Church for more than 20 years. In addition to farming, he loved working with horses, carving, woodworking, and making toys and furniture for his children, grand-children, and church.
Mr. Carney is survived by his daughters, Virginia Sachs (John) of Columbia City, Oregon, Sylvia Morgan (Mack) of Topeka, Kansas, son David Carney (Patricia Maxwell Carney) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, sister, Evelyn Huff of Arlington, Texas, Brother-in-Law Cecil Brown of Kansas City, Missouri, Sister-in-Laws Shirley Parsons of Los Angeles, CA and Lucille Brown of Humboldt, KS, eight grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11:00am , Friday, July 24 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Graveside services will be at 4:00pm at Fairview Cemetery in Mildred , Kansas . Mr. Carney will lie in state at the funeral home after 2:00 pm. on Thursday and the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm .
The family suggests memorial contributions to Allen County Historical Society & Museum, Osage County Historical Society Museum , or Mildred Methodist Church .
