George Robert Gammell, JR
70, of Topeka, died of natural causes April 18, 2004, at Topeka Health Care Nursing Home where he resided. George was born October 10, 1933 in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, the son of George Robert and Dorothy Katheryn Ryherd Gammell. George attended Chase County Community High School where he was active in a variety of sports and extra-curricular activities. He graduated in 1951 and went on to attend Kansas State University where he was active in the AFROTC and the KSU Livestock judging team, serving as a member until his death. Mr. Gammell graduated from KSU in 1955 and received a bachelor's of science degree. Mr. Gammell joined the Air Force upon graduation and was commissioned as first lieutenant in 1956. He logged more than 420 hours of flight time in F-94C fighters as a members of the 46th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. After his military service, Mr. Gammell worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail handler until his retirement.
George was preceded in death by Elizabeth Harris and is survived by daughter Joni M. Gonzales, two grandchildren, Topeka and a brother James Gammell.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00AM, Friday, April 23, 2204 at Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel. Graveside services will be held at Four Mile Cemetery south of Council Grove, Kansas with military honors at 2:30pm Friday.
Mr. Grammell will lie in state after 1:00pm Thursday until service time and a visitation will be held from 7:00pm to 9:00pm that evening at the funeral home.
