George L. Poirier, 91, Topeka, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2015.
He was born October 19, 1923, in Burlington, Vermont, the son of Leonard and Julia (Chiodini) Poirier. He graduated from Burlington High School.
George was a U.S. veteran serving in the Navy during WWII, Air National Guard during the 1950's and the Air Force during the Korean War, retiring in 1965 as Master Sgt. from Forbes Air Force Base.
He was a member of the St. Matthew Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Capitol Post No. 1, and the ELKS Lodge. He volunteered at Let's Help and Meals on Wheels and was a lifetime blood donor.
On October 21, 1943 he married Margaret "Muriel" Winton in Dearborn, Michigan. She preceded him in death on December 12, 2007. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Robert.
Survivors include three sons, Richard Poirier, Chris Poirier, both of Topeka; Daniel Poirier (Michele) Riverside, MO; five daughters Susan Poirier Casey, Topeka; Karen Beck (Steve), Orange, CA; Lynda Poirier, Lake Forest, CA; Wendy Collins (Jim), Topeka and Janice Khorram (Javad), Norfolk, VA; ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchildren and one sister, Peggy Briener, Burlington, VT.
George enjoyed playing golf. He worked as a marshal at Lake Shawnee Golf Course and in 1962 was the first person to hit a hole-in-one at Forbes Golf Course.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 27, 2015 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m.
