George Verner Gustafson was born June 21, 1931 to Verner and Esther (Blantin) Gustafson in Paterson, New Jersey. George passed away on March 1, 2017 in Topeka, Kansas.
George lived most of his childhood on the East coast, from New York to Florida. George met the love of his life, Lorraine Rich while living in New Jersey. They were married on November 24, 1950.
George's job moved them from New Jersey to Illinois and Indiana in the 1960's. He and his brother Ernest then went into the housing business which moved the family to New York.
In 1975, George and Lorraine moved to Kansas where they operated the Mister Donut shops in Lawrence and Topeka. George later worked for the IRS. He and Lorraine then operated a food cart called EZ Eats. This is where many of their grandchildren had their first jobs and learned to work hard, be friendly and to count back change the old fashioned way. George also owned and operated a milk delivery business and worked for Via Courier Service.
George was a regular volunteer at his church, First United Methodist and State Street Elementary School, where he taught children to read. He loved doing this and did it until his health no longer would allow him.
George's greatest love was his family. There was nothing better than time spent with family. No matter what you were doing, if you were with family, life was good. He loved fishing with his sons, Michael and David and his grandchildren.
George is survived by his sister, Jane (Betty) Donovan. His children, Michael and Kathie Gustafson, Mayetta; David and Shirley Gustafson, Topeka; JoAnne and David Bentley, Berryton. His grandchildren, Jeremiah Gustafson, Sarah Tucker, Rachel Chu, Elizabeth Ruiz, Mark Gustafson and Michelle Gustafson.
To the first generation of grandkids, George was Grandpa or Grandfather. When the 'greats' came along he was also known as Grandpa Dinosaur and Papa George. His great grandchildren are, Janine, Jayden and Jaxon Gustafson, Alden and Amelia Tucker, Ava Chu and BreAunna and Bentley Ruiz.
George is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
George's faith has brought him back into the loving arms of his Savior and these family members who preceded him in death; his wife Lorraine, Grandsons Mathew Gustafson and Joshuah Gustafson and his brothers Ernest Gustafson and Phillip Graeter.
