George Goebel

Dr. George Goebel, 84, of Topeka, passed away September 14, 2002, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center.
Dr. Goebel was an educator in Hanston, Jetmore, and Topeka for nine years and an elementary school principal in Topeka for 32 years. He served in the US Army during World War II and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands.
Dr. Goebel was born January 25, 1918 in Jetmore, the son of George H. and Grace Goebel. He earned a bachelor's and master's degree in education from Emporia State University. He earned a doctorate of education from the University of Kansas.
He was an active member serving in several official capacities at First United Methodist Church. He was also a teacher for the YOMAC Sunday School class. He was education organizations, and served as a representative to their state and national organizations. He was recognized as the Kansas Outstanding Elementary School Principal. He was a member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club where he had 50 years perfect attendance. That organization honored him with the Hixon Award for outstanding service above and beyond. He also served as AARP State Coordinator for retired teachers
He married Maudene Messmer on December 21, 1945 in Wichita, Kansas. She survives.
Dr. Goebel was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Goebel of Jetmore. Other survivors include a daughter, Marti Dittman and husband Bill of Hermitage, Missouri; two sons, Stephen Goebel and wife Tammy of Norwich, Kansas; and Gary Goebel of Dallas, Texas; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, and five step-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10:30am Wednesday in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church of Topeka. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Dr. Goebel will lie in state after 12:00 noon at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 pm Tuesday .
