George "Bud" F. Glendening, Jr., 85, Topeka, passed away Friday, May 23, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital. He was a retired business owner. Bud was born on Nov. 18, 1922 near Codell, KS, the son of George and Celesta (Adams) Glendening. Bud graduated from Codell High School in 1940 and joined the Army Air Corps as a B-25 tail gunner attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He flew numerous missions from Italy and Africa before being shot down over France and held for six months as a Prisoner of War by the Germans. Bud was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Clusters and Purple Heart medals for his service. Bud married Gloria Johnson on October 6, 1945 in Las Vegas, NV and they celebrated 62 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife, three sons, Tim and wife, Karen; Gary and Dian; Kevin and wife, Terra; one daughter, Sherrie; and six grandchildren. Private graveside services will be held at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery on Tuesday. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is handling arrangements.
