George R. Gladfelter, Sr., 98, died Tuesday, February 13 at Aldersgate Village.
Born in Topeka, Kansas, to George F. and Helen (Bond) Gladfelter, on March 20, 1908, he graduated from Topeka High School in 1926. As a young apprentice electrician he was part of the electrical crew that installed the chandeliers and light fixtures in the new Topeka High School and the large neon Jayhawk atop the Jayhawk Hotel.
In 1937, he married Elsie Mae Dawdy. They were married for 65 years. During WWII he worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Alabama.
After returning to Topeka in 1945, he worked for Dowling Electric Co. and was the general foreman of the electrical crew for KPL. In the 1950's he was business agent for IBEW Local 226 and in the 1960's he was a city electrical inspector and the general foreman of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company electrical crew. He retired from Peters Electrical Company in 1973. Throughout his career he was an instructor for Journeyman Apprentice Training School for IBEW.
In recognition of his work as a Boy Scout leader, he received the Order of the Eagle. He was the oldest retired member of IBEW nationwide and the oldest living card member of IBEW Local 226 (76 years), a 58 year member of Masonic Orient Lodge No. 51, and a member of West Side Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie, and his brothers Harold and Frank Gladfelter.
He was an enthusiastic history buff, an avid photographer and loved teaching.
He was a loving and beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.
Survivors include a son, George Robert (Bob) Gladfelter, Jr., and his wife Brenda; a daughter Joyce Alberg; and her husband, Ed; and six grandchildren; Chris, Jason, Matthew and Nathan Gladfelter, and Tom and Jennifer Alberg.
Mr. Gladfelter will lie in state after 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 15 at Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. that evening. A funeral service will be held at 9:00 a.m., Friday, February 16, 2007, at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. A private family inturnment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
