George Patrick Fairbanks, 72, of Topeka, passed away Friday, May 31, 2019.
He was born November 25, 1946, in Panama Canal Zone, Ancon the son of Joseph and Helen (Taaffe) Fairbanks. He graduated from Onega High School.
He served two tours in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam, earning several medals: National Defense Service, Vietnam Service with Bronze Star, Vietnam Campaign and a Purple Heart. He earned a dual degree from Kansas State University in Architecture and Building Sciences.
He loved to travel with his wife and enjoyed spending time with his grandkids. He was known for his woodworking and had a talent for finishing furniture. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #1650 and the D. A. V. (Disabled American Veterans).
George married Kara Kirk on July 2, 2001 in Topeka, Kansas, she survives. Other survivors include a his children, Bryan Fairbanks, Katie Nunnaly, Shane Fairbanks, Damien Fairbanks, Amanda Fairbanks, Jeffery Fairbanks and Regan Fairbanks; brother, Joseph Fairbanks, Jr.,; grandchildren, Nick Nunnaly, Ashley Nunnaly, Elena Nunnaly, Riley Fairbanks, Corbin Fairbanks and Ronin Artis. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Hugh Fairbanks
A Memorial Service will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at the Penwell-Gabel - Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka. Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at St. Clere Cemetery in Emmett, Kansas (North of St. Mary's). Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice.
