George W Champney Sr passed away at Topeka Community Healthcare Center on May 1St, 2006. George was born on 1-8-1917 in Enid, OK to George & Laura Champney. Losing his father at age 6 he was raised by his mother. He graduated Enid H S in 1936 and then served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He joined the Bricklayers Union in 1943. He married Ruth Gassett on 2-8-1943. This union produced four children, L Sue `Suzie' Randol, George `Kicker' Champney, Patricia Marvin, and M Elaine Champney. Moving to Topeka in 1945 he worked as steeple jack and a brick layer. In 1946 he started Champney Wrecking and Waterproofing Co. He successfully operated the business until retiring in 1997. As well as running the business he also donated much of his time as a member of the Board of Directors for the Topeka Salvation Army. He also served on the Shawnee County Zoning Appeals Board. He also donated many hundreds of hours, over the years, to assisting the community in times of crisis.
He was preceded in death by his beloved brother F M `Bud' Champney, and four sisters; Pearl Alford, Bertha Noland, Rita Hoff, & Tacy Lacore. He is survived by his wife and four children, 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and 9 nieces & nephew. A memorial is schedule at the Salvation Army, 1320 SE 6th, 11:00 a.m., Wednesday May 10th 2006.
