Gary Gene Gilbert

Gary G. Gilbert, 75, Topeka, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2025 at Stormont Vail Hospital. Gary was born July 13, 1949, in Concordia, Kansas, the son of Lael and Ruby (Veatch) Gilbert. 

He was a 1967 Graduate of Topeka West High School and attended Washburn University studying Music and Business. Gary served in the Marine Reserves. 

He was united in marriage to Sharon A. (Lane) Gilbert on November 17, 1972. 

He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution with his parents, a bowler, played in pool leagues and a golfer. Gary played in the Flairs during high school and several bands after graduation. He also played in Purple Rain in his twenties and early thirties, then Casual Cadillac until 2010. 

Gary purchased The Mail Box and Indian Delivery Service in the late 80’s, which had been his place of employment since January 1975. 

Gary was born in Concordia and lived in Plainville, then Lawrence for a short time, before Topeka became home. His passion was 60’s and 70’s rock and roll. His sense of humor was infectious, he loved his family and he was crazy about his grandson. Gary was loved by many and will be dearly missed. 

Survivors include his wife, Sharon, children Heather Read (Caleb), Jennifer Gilbert, Brian Gilbert, grandson Kolton Rooney, sister, Marcia Smith ( Kenny), sister-in-law, Linda Schaeffer (Harry), nephew, Michael Edwards, niece, Noel Gilbert, nephews, Chad Gilbert (Michelle), Justin Gilbert (Kristy), Brant Gilbert, great nieces, Taryn Gilbert, Mia Gilbert and great nephews, Tatum Gilbert and Matthew Edwards.

He was preceded in death by his father; Lael O. Gilbert, mother; Ruby Faye Gilbert, and brother, Neil Gilbert . 

There will be a celebration of life at a later date.
