Freeman Merrifield Vicory, 90, of Topeka KS died May 12, 2014.
Freeman was born December 22, 1923 in Greenleaf Kansas, the son of Freeman and Christine (Nelson) Vicory. He graduated from Greenleaf High School. He enrolled at Kansas State University for two semesters. He then enlisted in the United State Naval Reserve V-12 program and went on active duty in July 1943. He then attended Park College, Parkville, Missouri for three semesters.
Freeman graduated from the U.S. Naval Reserve Midshipmen School at Columbia University and was commissioned an Ensign USNR. Freeman served in the Pacific Theatre aboard various auxiliary ships during WW II. Upon release from active duty he again enrolled at Kansas State and earned a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering.
Freeman began work for the Construction Department of the Kansas Highway Commission in 1948 at Concordia, Kansas. He then transferred to the Bridge Design Section in Topeka in 1952 as a designer and became Squad Chief in December 1957. He retired from this position in 1988.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Downtown Optimist Club and the Sons of the American Revolution. He was also a member of the Kansas Engineering Society and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Freeman married Lois L. Marshall on May 4, 1947 in Richmond, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harold B. Vicory. Survivors include Lois, his wife of 67 years, a daughter Marsha Serk (Jerry), sons William Vicory (Karen), Jay Vicory (Sue), and David Vicory; 5 granddaughters, Amy Serk, DVM, Tracy Vicory-Rosenquest (Chris), Holly Serk, MD (Thomas), Katy Vicory, Sarah Vicory; and one great-grandson, Adam Scott Tommell, Jr.
Freeman was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, pasturing in the Flint Hills, bus tours and singing in the church choir.
Memorial Services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at First Lutheran Church. Private family burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Freeman will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday and the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
