Frederick Marion "Popie" Gogolski, 91, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, December 16, 2021.
He was born December 22, 1929, in Blakely, Pennsylvania, the son of Bernard and Marian (Schap) Gogolski. He was a graduate of Blakely High School.
Frederick began his military career with the United States Air Force in 1948, achieving the rank of TSGT. He retired on April 30, 1972.
Frederick married Ruth Ellen Harding on November 8, 1952 in Manchester, New Hampshire. She preceded him in death on June 30, 2002. Survivors include his daughter, Lizbeth Ann Gogolski of Topeka; two sons, Jonathan H. Gogolski (Susan) of Fort Collins CO and Timothy Gogolski (Karen) of Osage City; 8 grandchildren, 16 great- grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers and 4 sisters.
Frederick enjoyed family, camping, skiing, walking, exploring new places, Chief's football, the Royal's baseball, and the women's Washburn Basketball. There wasn't much he couldn't build, repair or craft. He was active with AFSA locally and nationally. Without a doubt, you could always find him reading the Capital Journal, Wall Street Journal, Reader's Digest, and National Geographic, anything to obtain knowledge or replicate.
He was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church, Topeka and volunteered at Doorstep and Lets Help. He never knew a stranger. Whether stopping on the side of the road to help someone, opening their home to those in need, or inviting many service people to celebrate holidays with them when they could not be home to celebrate with their families, Fred and Ruth were always there to lend a helping hand.
Honoring his request, cremation is planned. Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home is assisting the family. Inurnment will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606.
