Freddie J. Hughes, 73, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2011.
He was born December 3, 1937 in Carthage, TN, the son of Joe D. and Wealtha Mai (Scurlock) Hughes.
He served in the U.S. Air Force with the 90th Tactical Hospital.
He was employed by Coca-Cola and later for Pepsi Cola in Topeka.
Mr. Hughes was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, the Santa Fe Band, Fairlawn Rd. Swing Band, and the Topeka Polka Band all in Topeka.
Freddie married Diana M. Mathies on October 2, 1959 in Topeka. Survivors include his wife, and five children, David (Rhonda) Hughes, Topeka, Lisa Ann (Joseph) Kirira, Topeka, Julie Lynn (Scott) Eccles, Brooklyn, IA, Vicki M. (Steve) Sepulveda, Topeka and Mark A. (Michele) Hughes, Topeka; 23 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three siblings, Barbara Anderson, Glenda Hesson and Ronnie Hughes all of Tennessee.
Funeral ceremonies will be 11 a.m., Saturday, December 3, 2011 at Faith Lutheran Church, 1716 SW Gage Blvd, Topeka, KS 66604. Interment with military honors will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Topeka. Freddie will lie in state after 3 p.m., Friday, at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Diana Hughes which will be designated at a later time and sent in care of Capital Federal Savings.
