Fred W. Rausch Jr., 91, passed away April 5, 2015, in Topeka. He was born July 11, 1923, in Topeka, the son of Jessie Fehl Rausch and Fred W. Rausch.
Fred graduated from Topeka High School in 1941 and attended Washburn University, interrupting his studies to join the U.S. Army. Fred served during WWII and participated in two assault landings on Leyte and Okinawa. He also served in the Korean War in the winter of 1951-52. He continued his service in the Army National Guard and Reserves and retired from the army with the rank of colonel. Fred married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Rogers, on October 30, 1943, at Truax Field at Madison, Wisconsin.
Fred graduated from Washburn Law School and practiced law in Topeka for 60 years. He started his career working in the revisor of statutes, attorney general and governor's offices, and was director of workers' compensation. He then was legal counsel for the Kansas Association of School Boards and opened a private practice. Fred served on the Topeka U.S.D. 501 School Board from 1957-77. Fred was a member of the First Congregational Church and the Kansas Bar Association, and was active in numerous civic and military organizations.
Fred is survived by his wife, Shirley, and children Judy (Roy) Marks, Topeka; Steve (Valerie) Rausch, Corona, California; Nancy (Mark) Reddy, Topeka; and Debbie Marvin, Topeka; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Allen Rausch, and sister, Jane Haynes.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at the First Congregational Church, 17th and Collins, Topeka. Visitation with family will precede the service at 10 a.m. Burial of cremated remains with military honors will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church, Capper Foundation, Disabled American Veterans, Topeka High School Historical Society or Shriner's Hospitals for Children.
