Fred H. Gades, Jr., 83, of Topeka, died December 25, 2004 at a Topeka retirement center where he has lived since September 1998.
He was born in Topeka on September 11, 1921, the son of Fred H. Gades, Sr. and Mildred Heere Gades. He attended Topeka schools and was graduated from Topeka High School in 1939. He attended Kansas University where he was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He entered the Army Infantry and saw duty in the Battle of the Bulge after which he was awarded the Purple Heart. Following his discharge, he attended Colorado University, earning a degree in Aeronautical Engineering.
He established his own company, Gades Sales, and was a manufacturer representative for various traffic control devices. He had lived in Boulder, CO., Wichita, KS., and Walnut Creek, CA before returning to Topeka.
He married Lucy Burris, October 18, 1943. She died March 26, 1992. He married Willa Jean Neal on September 22, 1994. She survives.Other survivors are two daughters; Mildred Roberts of Riverside, CA and Susan Starkweather of Overland Park, KS; two step-daughters: Patricia Teiber and Nancy Scherer; and one step-son, Paul Neal; five grandchildren and six step-granchildren.
Graveside services will be held at the Resthaven Cemetery in Wichita, KS on Monday, January 3, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. Memorial services will be held in the Fink Living Room at Brewster Place, 1205 SW 29th., Topeka on Tuesday, January 4, 2005 at 2:00 p.m.
Mr. Gades will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 12:00 , noon on Sunday. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday evening.
