Frederick W. Farrier, Jr., 81, died Sunday, November 3, 2002, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas.
He was born June 18, 1921, at Bethany Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas, to Frederick and Helen Huske Farrier. He attended public schools in Topeka, Kansas, where he graduated from Topeka High School. After his graduation, he completed welding schools in Topeka and Wichita. He attended both the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Pittsburg State University.
He worked in the family business with his parents at Frisby's Sewing Center in Topeka. He later joined the Topeka Public School System in 1960 where he worked at Capper Junior High School and Highland Park High School. Then he became the welding instructor at Kaw Area Technical School where he taught for eighteen years, retiring in 1987. He continued substituting at the Kaw Area Technical School and other USD 501 schools until shortly prior to his death.
Mr. Farrier was a World War 11 veteran serving with the Army Air Force in the South Pacific and Japan. He received several commendations.
Mr. Farrier was a member of Orient Lodge #51 A.F. & A.M., Boys Scouts of America where he became an Eagle Scout and was awarded the Arrowhead Honor and American Legion Post # 1. He spent many years serving as a Boy Scout leader and as a coach in the Ken Berry League and YMCA T-Ball League. He was also a member of Countryside United Methodist Church, having served on several committees.
He was married to Catherine Mannell on March 28, 1942. She died on August 28, 1984. He married Virginia Snyder on August 2, 1985. She survives. He was also preceded in death by his son, Craig, on January 5, 1992.
Other survivors include a daughter, Linda. Germer, Grant, NE, and two granddaughters.
Services will be Wednesday, November 6, 2002 at 10:30am in Countryside United Methodist Church, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, where Orient Lodge #51 A.F. & A.M. will conduct Masonic services. Mr. Farrier will lie in state at Penwell Gabel Mid-Town Funeral Home after 11:00 am Tuesday, November 5, 2002; the family will receive friends from 6-7:30 pm.
