Franke Stickley, 86, died on June 7, 2014. Born in Junction City to Ella and Franklin Shane, Franke was stricken with polio in 1948. For those who had the privilege of knowing Franke, she lived her vibrant life from a wheelchair and was an amazing woman who rose to any challenge. Her beautiful spirit is what will be remembered.
In 1952 she married Jay Stickley, the love of her life; together they raised three successful children, Gary, Susan and Sherri. Franke was very active and participated in PTA, Scouts, and numerous activities at Trinity Presbyterian Church. She especially enjoyed her Sunday school class.
Franke lived a life of service and caring for others. Among her many accomplishments, she was selected as the first recipient of the Topeka YWCA Humanitarian of the Year. A lifelong learner, at the age of 65 she completed her Political Science Degree from Washburn University. In 1973, Franke and Jay opened Taco Villa, a very successful family owned and managed restaurant which has become a gathering place for families and friends. It remains a fixture in the Topeka community.
Franke loved her family and friends. She loved to sit in the company of her dogs and watch the birds from her sunroom. Her home was decorated with the photos of her grandchildren who were the light of her life. She was so appreciative of the many neighbors and others who brightened her day, shared their time and energy, and made such a difference for the family. A special thank you to Kathie Taylor who made every day wonderful.
Franke is survived by her children, their spouses and her grandchildren; Gary Stickley, Tammy, Sarah and Jaymee; Sherri Stickley Grace, Joe, Allie, Sam and Shaina; and Susan Stickley, Anton Ahrens, Shane and Anna.
A celebration of her extraordinary life will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Saturday, June 14 at 2:00 PM. In the same spirit with which she lived her life, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Topeka Rescue Mission, 600 N Kansas Ave, Topeka, KS 66608. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
