Francis M. Moriarty

Francis M. Moriarty passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 11, 2005 in Topeka. He was 90. Born in Manchester, Connecticut to Matthew and Matilda Johnson Moriarty, Francis was predeceased by a sister, Mary "Mae" Moriarty Johnson. He received a B.A. from the University of Connecticut in 1938 and a Master's degree in psychology from Purdue Univeristy in 1940. He was inducted in the Army in 1942 and was on active duty, serving in Saipan in the South Pacific until 1945. He married Alice Marie Ewell in 1943. In 1950, he received a PhD in psychology from Yale University. The family then moved to Topeka, where Francis took a position as a psychologist at the Topeka V.A. Hospital, eventually becoming Chief of Psychology. He retired after a 30-year career with the V.A. In their retirement years, he and Alice traveled the world, visiting countries on every continent and living for a short time in London. They were politically active, lovers of good food and entertaining, collectors of art and avid gardeners. Alice predeceased Francis in 2003. He is survived by his children, Anne Moriarty of San Leandro, CA and Mark Moriarty of Warsaw, NY; by his grandchildren, Michael Mendez of Roseville, CA and Angela Mendez of Topeka; and by his great-grandchildren, Nicole, Joshua, Elijah, and Levi Mendez of Topeka. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel at a future date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Heartland Hospice of Topeka, 1033 S.W. Gage Blvd., Topeka, Kansas 66604.
