Frances Wingate

Frances "Tance" Wingate, 93, of Topeka, KS, passed away Oct. 3, 2008, at Brewster Place where she resided for the past 20 years. She was born May 1, 1915, in San Diego, CA, the daughter of Frank Burrow and Margaret MacFarland and step-father Hugh MacFarland.
Tance graduated from Topeka High School and the University of Kansas. She married Norville Gregory Wingate (deceased) June 8, 1940, at the home of Margaret and Hugh MacFarland. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Junior League, Topeka Country Club, The Broadmoor and The Garden of the Gods Club. She volunteered at Stormont-Vail Hospital and the Cancer Society, was a life member of the Alumni Association of the University of Kansas and served on the Board of Directors.
Survivors include: Margaret W. Elstun, Bill, Atlanta, GA; Dr. Gregory B. Wingate, Sally, Phoenix, AZ; Carolyn W. Bamford, John, Denver, CO. Grandchildren: Melinda E. Lockhart, Llano, TX; Greg W. Elstun, Richmond, VA; Grant G. Wingate, San Diego, CA; Brandon C. Zimmerman, Denver, CO. Great-grandchildren: Michael and Lindsay Lockhart, Alex and Aiden Elstun, and awaiting twins, Brielle and Alexis Tance Wingate.
Mother was such a gracious lady and set a beautiful example of love for her family and friends and the everyday joy of life. As her children, we hope to carry on her values.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at First Presbyterian Church Chapel, 817 Harrison. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Mausoleum. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Brewster Place Foundation, 1205 SW 29th St., Topeka, KS 66611, or a charity of the donor's choice.
