Frances Ruth Hughes, 87, passed away peacefully March 2, 2011, surrounded by her family. Visitation is 12p-1p Tuesday, March 8th, followed by services at 1p at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th St. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 6th & Gage.
A life-long resident of Topeka, Ruth was born on Sept. 28, 1923, daughter of F.C. "Murph" and Pearl Murphy. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1941, and it was there she met her husband Charles whom she married in December 1941. Together nearly 60 years, they raised three children, with Charles preceding her in death in 2007.
A warm and caring person with a sparkling personality, Ruth loved people and enjoyed life. She focused her time on her beloved family, and was involved and interested in their activities. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Ruth worked part-time for 20 years at Washburn University's Registrar's Office, enjoying the camaraderie of her co-workers and making life-long friends.
Ruth's favorite hobby was shopping and she loved nothing better than a great sale. She especially enjoyed shopping for Christmas and she leaves her family with spectacular memories of those holiday times. She had a soft place in her heart for the family dogs and in her later years Spot was a close companion. Ruth is lovingly remembered by her family and friends and will be much missed by all.
Ruth is survived by her three children, daughter Diane (Mel) of Blue Springs, MO; and sons Dr. Steven Hughes (Darla) of Wichita, KS; and Daniel Hughes, (Vicki) of Topeka; her brother Dr. Randall Murphy (Pat) of Estero, FL; 10 grandchildren, Suzanne Stottlemyre (Todd), Wendy Siebold (Ben), Dr. Natalie Hammel (Alex), Dr. Bryan Hughes (Tina), Lori Whiting (Jason), Stephenie Hughes, Christy Stewart (Joe), Heather Kiethley, Jenna and John Deems; niece Susan Murphy (Dale) and nephews Tom Murphy (Susan) and David Murphy (Barb); and 11 great-grandchildren, Kylie, Connor, Savannah, Joshua, Ethan, Elyse, Madison, Kaden, Samantha, Mac and Riley.
