Flora Ellen Kerr, 97, died October 31, 2010, at Valley Vista Good Samaritan, Wamego, Kansas.
She was born December 19, 1912, in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, the daughter of Dr. Maurice W. Woodhull and Edna L. Woodhull. She graduated from Chase County High School in 1930 and College of Emporia in 1934. She married E. Orville Kerr in 1935. Flora Ellen was a teacher at Lost Springs, Kansas in the mid 1930s, and later lived in Eldorado, Kansas before moving to Hutchinson in 1945, where she taught Seventh Grade English at Union Valley School.
Flora Ellen loved books, poetry and music, and to cook, travel, tell stories and do needle work. She especially loved to make the holidays warm and special for her family and extended family. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Hutchinson for 53 years and First Presbyterian Church of Wamego after she and Orville moved there in 1998. She was a 50-year member of PEO Chapter D of Hutchinson, and was also involved in other service organizations including church sewing circle.
Survivors include her son, Duane Kerr and wife Ruth of Wamego; daughter Nancy Courtney of Fort Collins, Colorado; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Orville and her son Kenneth. She survived all three of her siblings: Dr. M.L. Woodhull, Alilah Woodhull and Helen Woodhull.
Cremation has been performed and an inurnment service will occur in the spring of 2011 at Fairlawn Cemetery in Hutchinson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in Flora Ellen's name be sent to Grace Hospice, 3715 SW 29th St, Ste. 100, Topeka, KS 66614. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel - Topeka is assisting with the arrangements.
