Firene Walker

Irene Kenna Walker, 82, of Topeka, died Thursday, December 9, 2004 at St. Francis Hospital.

She was born in the Panhandle of Oklahoma in Beaver County on March 14, 1922. She graduated from Hepler High School in 1940 and attended Neosho County Community College.

She married Ben S. Walker in 1942. He died in 1972. Irene was a devoted teacher of gradeschool and LD for 30 years, first in Chanute, and then at USD 501 in Topeka. She had a Bachelors in Education from Pittsburg State University and two Masters in Education from Washburn University. She was a devoted walker for 20 years in events throughout Kansas and Missouri and always walked her age the week of her birthday, last walking 80 miles in 2002. In retirement, besides walking, she traveled, visited her family, and actively pursued geneology. She fought a valiant battle with cancer. Her wit, spirit, and zest for life will be missed by all.

Survivors include two sons; Steven Walker with Lori Clune of Freso, CA; and Gregg and his wife, Betsy, of Hillsboro, KS.; eight loving grandchildren, Matt Hopson-Walker and wife Amanda, Noah Hopson-Walker, Sara (Walker) and her husband Chad Whorton, Benjamin Walker and wife Angie, Ruth , Peter, Naomi and Rebekah; 2 great grandchildren; two brothers, Emory and wife Marjorie Pitzer of Bartlesville, OK; and George and wife Billie Pitzer of Pittsburg, KS. and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Pitzer of Lawrence, KS. In addition, she happily played the role of grandmother to 15 nieces and nephews who spent many hours learning to sew, knit and chrochet with her, and occasionally walking with her on a few of the many miles she walked in organized walks and her daily 6 mile walks, come rain or shine.

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 13, at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 3033 SW MacVicar, with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery in Chanute at 2:00 p.m. Mrs. Walker will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after noon on Sunday and family will greet friends between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m., Sunday evening.
