Evelyn Long Seigle, 92, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, November 17, 2005 at Aldersgate Village, where she had resided since 1994.
Evelyn was born in Galveston, TX, December 19, 1912, the daughter of Horace Milton Long and Laura Wallace Long. The family lived next in Topeka where Evelyn attended Lowman Hill Grade School, Boswell Junior High, Topeka High School, and Washburn University. Following her graduation from the university in 1935, she taught school in a few Kansas communities until her marriage to William F. Seigle in 1939. After raising three sons, Evelyn taught school again in the LaCygne and Paola areas. Evelyn and Bill and their sons lived in Topeka, where Bill was Dean of Men at Washburn University, and in Sharon Springs, Kansas, where Bill was principal of Wallace County Community High School. Bill and Evelyn retired from teaching in Paola, Kansas in 1975.
Evelyn was an active member of the music club in Sharon Springs and taught children's Sunday school classes there. She wsa very active in the Methodist church through the years and was a member of WSCS and United Methodist Women, where she was a district officer and the recipient of many awards. In Topeka, she was a member of the Susanna Wesley Methodist Church. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. While living at Aldersgate, Evelyn was on the finance committee for the village council; she was chairperson for the annual bazaar and an area leader representing residents from her hall.
Evelyn had great zest for life. Her many interests include cooking, music, sports, sewing and many crafts projects. Her family and many relatives will fondly remember the Christmas stockings she knit for each member. While living in Topeka, Evelyn greatly enjoyed spending time with her niece, Mary Alice Smith, and being included in the activities of her great-nieces and nephews and their families. Some of her happiest moments were listening to her som Tom play the piano.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Bill in 1989 and her son Jim in 1997. Survivors include her two sons, Bill , Olathe, Kansas, Tom, Seattle, WA; Bill's wife Jean and Jim's wife Mickey, Fayetteville, GA. She is also survived by six grandchildren; Lisa Burke, Jill Meyer, Ken Seigle, Kim Seigle, Mike Seigle and Doug Seigle; four great grandchildren, Holly Seigle, Alison Burke, Adam Burke and Jackson Meyer; and a sister, Miriam Steves, Topeka.
Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at Aldersgate Village, in the Wesley Chapel, on Monday, November 21 at 11:30 am. Inurnment will be at 1:30 pm that afternoon in Mount Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Good Samaritan Fund at Aldersgate Village, 7220 SW.
