Evelyn M. Leeman

Evelyn May (Reid) Leeman, 93, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, October 1 at her home. She was born on April 19, 1918 in Waterville, Kansas to Ralph Ralston, Sr. and Elsie (Whitebread) Reid.

Eveyln graduated from Topeka High School in 1937. On June 11, 1942 she married Hugh Greer Leeman in Colfax, Louisiana. He preceded her in death in 1995.

As an Air Force wife, she was a family service coordinator for Forbes Air Force Base from 1951 until 1956. She was also president and treasurer of NCO wives. From 1956 until 1961, she worked in family services at Loring Air Force Base in Maine. In 1961, she began working for Robert Hall's clothing store, as a bookkeeper until the 1970's. Evelyn assisted during election time by working with the election machines. She was a member of the Lion and the Lamb Church, American Legion Auxiliary, USAF Sergeant's Association Auxiliary and Retired Sergeant's Association Auxiliary.

Evelyn enjoyed making Christmas candies, brownies and cookies for her family and friends. She would gamble on $20 which she would play on $5 and Pat would spend the remaining $15. $5 would last her about 2 ½ to 3 hours.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Carole Sue Smith, Patricia Ann Samson and James Atchison all of Topeka; her brother Ralph R. (Gloria) Reid of Scottsdale, AZ; eight grandchildren, Bob (Dawna) Samson of Topeka, Debora (John) Hensley of Ottawa; Mike Standley, Gary Samson; David (Jamie) Standley all of Topeka and Darlene Soldo of Front Royal, VA; Cindy Atchison and Debbie Clark both of Virginia; eight great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. today at the funeral home.
