Evelyn Glad Lawson Obituary
Evelyn Glad Lawson peacefully passed on December 29, 2011, with her loving family at her side. She was born on December 3, 1919, the beloved daughter of Wendell P. and Pearle Elwell Thorpe.
Evelyn and her brother Martin were raised on a farm in Dona Ana, New Mexico, in the shadow of the Organ Mountains. In 1936, at the age of 16, Evelyn pursued a degree in bacteriology at the New Mexico State University. An active member of Zeta Tau Alpha, she graduated from NMSU, one of only four women to graduate with a bachelor's of science degree.
Evelyn married the love of her life, Thomas Walter Lawson, Jr., on October 17, 1941. They embarked on a life of adventure living in Chicago, Colorado Springs, San Francisco, El Paso, and Nashville, finally settling in Topeka in 1949 to raise their growing family.
In 1961, Evelyn chose to utilize her science degree as a microbiologist for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. She was an outstanding member of the Water Quality Laboratory for 24 years, paving the way for future generations of professional women in science.
Evelyn loved her family and her life. She was an avid gardener, and had many other creative interests. She was an active member of Grace Episcopal Cathedral. As one of the Cathedral's Daughters of the King, she made blankets for the homeless, and delivered altar flowers to convalescents and the elderly. Evelyn is remembered for her kindness and generosity, her bright smile, and boundless sense of humor. She was described by many as their best friend.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Tom, her brother, Martin, and grandson Joel Gregory. She is survived by her devoted children, Joel and Linda Lawson, Penny and Ed Plamann, Aleilah Patricia & John Graham, and Carolyn and Danny Jones, and her five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on January 3, 2012, at 10:00 a.m., at Grace Cathedral, 701 SW 8th Street, Topeka, KS. There will also be an afternoon service at Brewster Place, 1205 SW 29th Street, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the memorial fund at Grace Episcopal Cathedral in honor of her work with the Daughters of the King.
