Evelyn Gehrt

Evelyn Dorothy Gehrt, 84, joined her Lord and Savior on November 24, 2009. She was born December 26, 1924, to Johann and Dorothea (Anschutz) Schulz. She was the second of four daughters: Ruth Grau, Katherine Deterding, and Margaret Wachs. She was united in marriage to Andrew Gehrt on June 8, 1947 at St. John's Lutheran Church, where she was a lifelong member. He preceded her in death on November 5, 2006.
Evelyn attended St. John's Lutheran School and was a graduate of Topeka High School. She also attended Clark's Business School. She worked at Capper's Publications for 5 years. Following her marriage, she was a homemaker and volunteered much of her time at church and as librarian for Topeka Lutheran School. She was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with her family.
Survivors include her 3 children, Matthew Gehrt (Debbie), of Topeka; Beth Wilhelm (David), of Hardy, IA; and Joanna Bradshaw (James), of Topeka. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, her 3 sisters, 4 sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday, November 27 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church of Topeka, 9th and Fillmore. Funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary. Committal will be at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be given to Lutheran World Relief, Midland Hospice Care Services, or The Gideon's International.
