Evelyn Forrest Herring, 85, of Topeka passed away August 1, 2011 at Rolling Hills Nursing Home where the compassionate and loving staff cared for her since 2008. She was born August 30, 1925 to Forrest and Edna Tucker in Dorchester, TX. She graduated from Adamson High School in Dallas. Evelyn married Roy Herring; they later divorced. She moved to Topeka in 1959. Evelyn retired from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment in 1990 after 25 years of service. Evelyn loved to bowl, read, watch sports and mysteries and play an occasional slot machine.
She was preceded in death by her sister Louise, her parents, and her first born, David Herring. Survivors include her children, all of Topeka, Marc Herring, Nancy Hewitt (Tom), Susan Marra (Emmett), Lisa Cushing; a brother, Billy Tucker (Ruth), of Texas; 16 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 4, 2011, at Mt. Hope Cemetery, 17th & Fairlawn, Topeka. Evelyn will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Grace Hospice, 1033 SW Gage Blvd, Topeka, KS 66604.
