Evelyn F. McClain, 97, of Topeka, passed away on July 27, 2009 at Lexington Park Retirement Facility.

She was born on March 31, 1912 on a farm near Courtland, Kansas, the daughter of John Frederick and Anna Maria Othburg Swanson.

Evelyn lived on the farm and attended public schools in Scandia, KS, until she moved to Mayetta, KS in her late teens, to live with her sister, Sadie Baker. She attended public schools in Mayetta and Topeka. She moved to Topeka in the early 1930's and married Lige McClain in 1933. They enjoyed a long and happy marriage until he passed away in 1973.

Evelyn was a good homemaker and gardener. She also enjoyed travel and had been over most of the United States with her husband as well as much travel following his death. In her lifetime she had visited all of the 50 states as well as travel abroad to Europe, Sweden, Russia and Japan.

In 1942, Evelyn joined the American Women's Volunteer Services and was assigned with several others to assist in the Topeka Police Department. This led to her learning to do fingerprint work as well as photography. She was then hired permanently by the police department where she retired in 1979. She was honored with a very nice retirement party at which time her long and faithful service was honored.

She was the youngest of 11 children, of whom 10, including Olivia Swanson, Sadie Baker, Frederick Swanson, Ellen Swanson, Carl Swanson, Elva Millie Pahl, Clarence Swanson, Oscar Swanson, Mable Larson and Ruby Harrison, preceded her in death. She was a resident of Lexington Park Nursing Facility.

Following the death of her husband, Evelyn adopted his daughter, Virginia Lyon, who now resides in the state of Washington. She is also survived by Virginia's daughter, Margie Brandon, and great granddaughter, Cheralee Carr, of Knoxville, TN.

In addition, Evelyn is survived by nieces, Georgia Lee Widener, Sharon Miller, Karen Stooke, Carole Gibbs, Ruth McGowen, Joanne Kallenberger, Karolyn Sanders, and Barbara Beyer; nephews, Charles Swanson, Fred Swanson, Robert Swanson, Harold Larson, Allen Larson, and their children and the children of deceased nephew, Bud Swanson, Sue Nelson, Paula Brubaker, and Greg Swanson. She is also survived by a grand niece, Anna Louise Marvik, whose mother, Norma Marvik passed away in 2009; along with numerous other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 31, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Mrs. McClain will lie in state at the funeral home after 2:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Amana Lutheran Church of Scandia, Kansas or the Historical Museum of Scandia, Kansas.
