Eva Mae (Tunis) Wood, 95, died December 1, 2014 at Aldersgate Village in Topeka where she made her home in recent years. Eva was born May 25, 1919, the daughter of Ed and Emma (Niehaus) Tunis at Netawaka, Kansas. Eva graduated from Netawaka High School . She married Walter Wilson Wood September 30, 1937. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before Walter passed away in 1997. Eva is survived by a son, Stephen Evan Wood and his wife Marilyn Kay (Shanks) Wood of Hays, Kansas; and a daughter, Mary Kathryn (Wood) Valentine and her husband Thomas A. Valentine of Topeka, Kansas.
Eva also leaves behind four grandchildren: Brian Wilson Wood and his wife Julie, of Salina, Kansas; Randall Curtis Wood and his wife Angela of North Canton, Ohio; Scott Ryan Freeman and his wife Marjorie of Asheville, North Carolina; and Nichole Kristine Freeman of Denver, Colorado. Eva also leaves behind two step-grandchildren Michelle Ann Valentine and her husband Cal Reese of Englewood, Colorado; and Christina Marie Valentine of Shawnee, Kansas; seven great-grandchildren: Emily, Lindsey, and Lauren Wood; Ryan Wood; and Jake, Sarah and Giancarlo Freeman. Eva's sister Minnie Inez (Tunis) Wolverton Gunselman, preceded her in death.
Eva and Walter Wood lived in Whiting for several years after marriage and then moved to Topeka just before Walter joined the Army and served in WW II. Eva was a homemaker when her children were young and was later employed by Kansas Power and Light Co. She was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church for 70 years, sang in the choir, played in the bell choir, served on church work groups, and helped prepare many fund-raising dinners sponsored by the Homebuilders Sunday School Class. She worked in the food bank, volunteered at the Rescue Mission, delivered Meals on Wheels and was active in United Methodist Women helping to raise funds for missions.
Mrs. Wood was cremated. A coffee reception will be held Saturday, December 6 starting at 9:30 AM in the narthax at the Highland Park United Methodist Church, 29th and SE Michigan in Topeka. Memorial services will follow at 10:00 AM in the Church Sanctuary. Private interment will be held at a later date.
