Eugene Haughey

Eugene James "Gene" Haughey, age 99, Topeka, died April 23, 2011, at McCrite Plaza Health Center. He was born in Phillipsburg, KS, on January 8, 1912, the son of Robert Bruce and Daisy Ellen Haughey. Gene graduated from Wetmore High School, Wetmore, KS, in 1929. Following his graduation, he attended Pittsburg State College.

Gene owned a restaurant from 1940-1942; was Assistant Labor Commissioner from 1965-1969; and retired from the Operating Department of the Santa Fe in 1976, after 43 years of service. Following his retirement, he worked in the Kansas Legislature for 13 years.

Gene was a member of the First Christian Church from 1950-2000; and had been a member of First Lutheran Church since June 2001. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Orient No. 51, Scottish Rite, and Arab Shrine. Gene was also a member of the United Transportation Union.

He married Mary Elizabeth Johnson on October 2, 1934. She died in February of 1997. Gene married Helen Elizabeth Blair on September 2, 2000. She died in November of 2006.

Gene is survived by his daughter, Connie Haughey, and two nieces.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at First Lutheran Church, Topeka. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. Memorial contributions may be made to First Lutheran Church, 1234 Fairlawn Rd., Topeka, KS 66604. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, Topeka, is in charge of arrangements.
