Eugene E. Matthews

Eugene E. "Gene" Matthews, 89, Topeka, passed away Oct. 28, 2011. He was born July 31, 1922, in Topeka, KS, the son of Elmer and Lena (Morris) Matthews. Gene was a graduate of Topeka High and later served his country with the United States Air Corps. during WWII. He was a mechanic for many years and owned and operated Matthews Import Services in Topeka.

Eugene married Kathryn Shehi on September 12, 1945 in Kansas City, Kansas. She preceded him in death in 2005. Survivors include three sons, Craig, Pat (Kelly), and Steve (Alice), all of Topeka; grandsons, Craig, Jeff, Dave, Tom, Steven, Blaine; granddaughter, Morgan; two great granddaughters, Kayden and Emma; one great grandson, Jaiden Kerry; sister, Dorothy Kelly; and a large extended family. He was also preceded in death by a son, Kerry; and daughter-in-law, Sheri Lamaster Matthews.

Mr. Matthews was cremated. Memorial services will be at 3:00 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Cornerstone of Topeka, Inc., 1195 SW Buchanan, Suite 103, Topeka, KS 66604.
