Ethel "Winkie" Amick, 94, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at a Topeka care facility. She was born February 16, 1923 in Dodge City, Kansas, the daughter of Fred and Elizabeth (Ratzlaff) Lawrence.
Winkie graduated from Dodge City High School. She was commissioned as a Salvation Army Officer in 1942. She and her husband served as clergy for Salvation Army congregations in Coffeyville, Parsons, Kansas City, Missouri, Newton, Salina, Wichita and Lansing, Michigan. They later managed the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers in South Bend, Indiana, Davenport, Iowa, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Kansas City, Missouri from where they later retired. They enjoyed traveling their whole lives.
Winkie married Hubert Amick on December 16, 1942 in Kansas City, Missouri. He preceded her in death in July 2005. She was also preceded in death by their son, Mark Amick.
Survivors include their daughter, Melody A. Ross of Topeka, three grandchildren, Heather (Craig) Schmidt, Kelly (Dan) Ross, Geoff Ross (Brad Bradford), four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Isaac, Haley and Joe.
Services will held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the Salvation Army Worship Center, 1320 SE 6th St. where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Cremation will follow the service and private inurnment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Salvation Army, 1320 SE 6th St., Topeka, Kansas 66607 or to Winter Meadow Homes Benevolent Fund, 2832 SW Mulvane St., Topeka, Kansas 66611.
