Esther P. Harris, 98, Topeka, passed away on January 1, 2010 at her home.
She was born on June 16, 1911 in South Omaha NE, the daughter of the Reverend William Allan and Mary E. (Sterrett) Pollock.
Esther attended schools in Illinois and Ohio, and she graduated from high school in College Springs, Iowa in 1928. She graduated from Tarkio College, Tarkio, MO in 1932. She taught high school math in Allerton, IA, and also in Ainsworth, IA. She was secretary to the Head of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Iowa Medical College where she met her husband, Hubert L. Harris, M.D. Esther married Hubert in College Springs, IA on October 3, 1940. Dr. Harris served in World War II. Before and after the war, they lived in Baltimore, MD, Camp Phillip, Salina, KS, Chicago, Ill, Galveston, TX, and Boston, MA. They moved to Topeka in 1949. Dr. Harris preceded her in death on September 17, 1993.
Mrs. Harris was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church, Topeka, where she was a Sunday and Bible School teacher, circle leader of the Women's Organization, trustee and elder, and she was a member of Chapter GJ of the PEO Sisterhood. She had been chosen as "Topeka Woman of the Year" for her help in passing a school bond. Esther was actively involved with her husband as an office manager for his Dermatology practice of 43 years.
Surviving are her son: Kenneth A. Harris, M.D., Ellensburg, WA, and two grandchildren: Sarah Courtney Harris and Eric Alexander Harris.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 1st Presbyterian Church, Topeka, at 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 9, 2010. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka.
Esther will lie in repose after noon on Friday, January 8, at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. No family visitation is planned.
Memorial contributions may be given to Christian Children's Fund, the Cat Association of Topeka, or the Helping Hands Humane Society of Topeka.
