Esther Glenn Alberg
Esther Mae Alberg, Topeka, died April 27, 2004, at Aldersgate Village where she had resided for 17 years. The family had planned to celebrate her 100`h birthday on Saturday, May 1, 2004.
She was born in Lyndon, Kansas the daughter of Edward and Mae Glenn. She graduated in 1922 from Scranton High School where she excelled on the girls Osage County Championship basketball team.
She married Henry Birjer Alberg on August 29, 1928. They moved to Topeka in the early 1930's where they made their home for the rest of their lives. He preceded her in death in 1977. She was also preceded in death by her brother John, her sister Leone, and a great-granddaughter Jane Donaldson.
Family, needlework, and gardening were her greatest joys in life. She crocheted over 230 Afghans, blankets, and bedspreads for family and friends during her lifetime. She worked in the alteration departments of Nightingales and Ray Beers Clothing Co. Her beautiful flower beds and potted plants were a testament to her love of gardening.
She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all of her family. Her four children are: a son, John August, II and his wife, Nancy, of Brownsville, Texas; a son, Henry Birjer, Jr. and his wife Joan, of Overland Park, Kansas; a daughter Lois Ann Lander and her husband, Delos of Hudson, Ohio; and a son, Edward Glenn and his wife, Joyce, of Topeka. Other survivors include 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
She will lie min state after 12:00 noon and the family will greet friends and relatives on Friday, April 30 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The celebration of her life will begin at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May l, 2004, at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery immediately following the service.
