Ervin "Spence" Spencer, 92, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, April 5, 2015.
He was born November 5, 1922, in Fayette, Missouri, the son of Elbert and Katherine (Brown) Spencer. He was raised by his grandmother Brown and graduated from Fayette High School in 1940.
Spence was proud to be a World War II veteran. He was employed by Kraft for many years, retiring in 1985. He attended Countryside United Methodist Church and very much enjoyed spending time with family and golfing.
Spence married Cecelia Burks on April 21, 1946. She passed away in August of 1981. Spence then married Betty J. Spencer on December 10, 1982 in Topeka. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, John Spencer of Topeka; step-children, Sharon and Wayne Johnson of Topeka, Carol and Dennis Honohan of Mustang, Oklahoma, Don and Karen Tuffley of Topeka, Gail and Jack Carlson of Topeka, and Barbara and Bill Rice of Mt. Vernon, Missouri; 13 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 9, 2015 at the Mt. Hope Chapel, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka. Entombment will follow. Spence will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Sheltered Living, TARC, Midland Care, or Countryside United Methodist Church.
